Camp Oyo - Shawnee State Forest Hike '08

The weather turned out better than forecasted.  Friday afternoon and Saturday were mostly sunny.  The wind picked up Saturday afternoon and threatened to rain.  The evenings were lit with a nearly full moon.  The evenings were a bit cool but still pleasant.  Insects were not a problem.

Our trip to Camp Oyo completed our visits to all of the Simon Kenton Camps.  It is a beautiful old camp located in the Shawnee State Forest.  Our purpose of this campout was to hike a portion of the Shawnee State Forest backpack trail.

We conducted a pack "shakedown"  at Asbury church prior to leaving.  We arrived at Camp Oyo Friday night at around 9:00 p.m.  We hiked to Camp 4 in the Shawnee State Forest.  We hiked approximately 6 miles on Saturday, however, the terrain was rough with frequent and steep elevation changes.

We got to camp and many in the group had the pleasure of experiencing "real" backpacking food.  We had lasagna, beef stroganoff, and rice and chicken. For desert, we had chocolate mudslide pie and peaches and cream pudding.

The following day, we got up to a brief rain and hiked out via State Forest Route 1 and 125.  We got back to Camp Oyo by 10:45 a.m.
