Philmont Shakedown Hike - Shawnee State Forest Hike '09
Friday afternoon and Saturday were mostly sunny. We saw thunderstorms in the late afternoon.
We hiked a total of 23 miles on Saturday and Sunday. We started at Camp Oyo and hiked past campsite 2 to campsite 1 where we spent Saturday night. Along the way we encountered a tree limb on fire. It had been started by a lightning strike. We are not sure how long it had been burning but fortunately the surrounding woods were wet and the fire did not spread. We put the fire out.
Although we were all tired, we did not have any foot problems or equipment failures. We experimented with turkey bag cooking and decided that it would be worth doing at Philmont.
